I seriously need some help guys...

Thu Oct 1, 2009, 7:13 PM
In less than a year, I'm expected to go to college like every other person my age....yet for the life of me, I have no motivation beyond going through the goddamn hoops so I can get a job and join the fucking workforce.

Why the hell should I go to college? For the life of me, I cannot reason with myself enough to motivate me into going...I don't know exactly why, but it's probably because I have always just been 'expected' to go...and 'told' to go rather than given any other option.

I know this seems kind of emo for one of my journals but I need some advice...whether you've gone to college, chose not to, or are like me and are lost as all fuck.

The only thing I don't want to see is shit like, "College students make (X amount) more money in their lifetime than people with just a highschool diploma." It's not that I have anything against money or college in general. I just don't want that to be the reason that I bother going to college.

Please help...

That's a toughie =(
The reason I liked going to college (when I still had money to. Damn, I really need a job T-T) was that I basically got to control everything that I wanted to take; it was mostly the part of me being enjoying the fact that it was like my senior year of high school (4 art classes, all in one day! An entire school day of art! the teachers loved me and didn't care what I did! XD)

Seriously, though, unlike in high school, where you only pick a few things to take, you do get the freedom to choose what classes you want. It isn't much but you don't feel like you're being force-fed crap you don't want, minus the required courses. Aside from that little incentive, though there is, unfortunately, nothing that I think works as a motivational T-T
I mean, I know that taking the specialized courses will help me tons later when I try to get the job I'm aiming for, but there is nothing. It's not about the money, all that college is good for, I think, is increasing the probability of employment in the field you want to, at most, 99%, unless it is completely saturated. I do wish I could help convince you to go, but I'm at a loss as to what to say. Friends suck in college; I kept trying to contact them but they never called me back XD
Add in the negative factors to the situation where you can't go to the place you want, and everything sucks even more.
That being said, even though I'm not going to OCI, like I want to, or MHCC, where I can, I do love college. I dunno why, but I do. I would recommend that you go to a nearby community college, if you can, to test it out and then decide from there; it's better if the classes you take give you transferable credits to a college you want to go to that you can go to later on. Also, uselessly useless advisory friend is uselessly useless. I apologize T-T
Also, sorry for the ginormous response that says nothing.

If only I could just talk to you one on one!
You're so hard to reach.

I can tell you a lot of things you've already heard before but here's the best reason I chose to go to college: I'd be kicking myself in the butt if I didn't.

We'd have to talk if you want to hear more.
I'm coming back to town in two weeks. we can meet up then if you'd like?
I have so much to tell you!

Listen, you remember what i went through last year and i had the same feeling. And one thing you should keep in mind is that it doesnt need to be a fancy college, seriously, I'm going to pima, im not happy about it, but i'd probably beat myself senseless if i didnt go at all. Hell, you can take classes that could be for the kicks and giggles, like im taking mythology? do i need it? no. I might even take Ballroom dancing or Religion, just for fun. You never know what you'll get out of it. And trust me, no matter what money is always gonna be an issue. you just gotta deal and get through it and i'm still trying. This years gonna be tough on you, just like it was with me, but you'll get through it. And since you've been a wayyyy better student then i was, you'll have way more oppertunities then me =]

keep your head up, It will be worth it soon. <3

After graduating from highschool my parents wanted me to go right to college. I wanted to take one year off school and just find a job and just work and not worry about grades. However, my parents REALLY wanted me to go so I gave in.

Big mistake. I got an art major, but I almost switched it to English in my third year (and I should have) but at least I got a minor in English, so my college education wasn't completely wasted. I realized that I am more of a writer than I will ever be an artist.

If you don't want to go to college, DON'T. Listen to your gut feeling. I wish I had listened to mine.

I went to university. What I actually learned in classes was quite useless, but then again I have what you might call a liberal arts degree. My favourite courses happened to be the electives. I chose a variety of subjects (psychology, physics, art history) and they were all interesting to me. My actual major was extremely repetitive. Four years worth of core courses could have been condensed into two.

After grad, I had a job for a while, but it was totally unrelated to my studies.

However, my education was good for one thing. I learned a lot about dealing with idiots, which I suppose you can learn anywhere, but university is a microcosm and therefore a good training ground. (But I read the Twilight debate you had with RosetteCullen, so I guess you already know how to handle crazy people :) ).

Whatever you decide, know that you can always go to college later if you decide not to go right after high school. I've heard that in some fields, experience is much more important than formal education, so that's something to keep in mind too. Good luck.

wow i've been gone long. Anyways, hi, how are you...

As for the journal...I'm in my third year of college right now. I enjoy it and I find it an awesome experience. I...also happen to agree with the idea that college students make more money. But that's because I have a European mindset and in Europe (and most other countries) you REALLY can't get anywhere without a college diploma.

On the other hand, if you feel like college isn't your thing right now, that's fine too. I've browsed through other comments and found that they say pretty good things. So here's my imput: if you don't want to go, no one can/should force you. It's your life, your decisions. That's a part of growing up. You can always go back to college later on if you feel like it.

The only thing I'll say though, is that college classes go more in depth about subjects. They are geared towards helping you/preparing you for whatever it is you wish to do in life. It's not like high school AT ALL. Sure, you get homework, and you have to go to classes, but it's generally more laid back. College is about deepening your knowledge and also opening your mind to many different subjects there are in the world. It's about gaining experience, which is why I believe Europe is so for it.

...I sound like a blatant advertisement. SOrry about that, but it's just my belief. However, if you feel like you don't want to go now, that's ok. My mom didn't go straight off to college either. She spent a year or two working at a local hospital before going off to college.

That's just my imput. I hope it helps somewhat. Good luck! :D
